Set in four acres of rural woodland gardens in Bedfordshire, our charming and historic country house is the perfect backdrop for quintessentially English afternoon tea.
The tradition is said to have started in Leicestershire during the 19th century; however, afternoon tea is strongly linked with our neck of the woods too. At the time, it was normal to eat only two meals a day: one in the morning and another at night. Feeling peckish between breakfast and dinner, Her Grace Anna Maria, Duchess of Bedford, requested that her butler prepare her a pot of tea and light snack.
At first, the Duchess would take this meal alone in her boudoir, but soon began to invite friends and acquaintances to join her for afternoon tea in the drawing room – thus the tradition as we know it today was born.
Perfect as a standalone treat or part of a baby shower or birthday party, afternoon tea at Woodland Manor is held in our bright and airy conservatory – a picturesque setting we’re sure Her Grace would have approved of. We serve tiers of plates generously filled with sandwiches, homemade cakes and scones, as well as side dishes of strawberry jam and clotted cream.
To complement your meal, you can choose from a wide selection of teas including Earl Grey, Assam and Darjeeling, in addition to breakfast, peppermint and fruit. We also offer a decaffeinated option.
If you would like to enjoy a sophisticated variation on the traditional classic, why not try our sparkling afternoon tea? This delicious alternative comes with two glasses of Prosecco.
