Held in our bright and airy conservatory, afternoon tea at Woodland Manor is a tremendously tasty affair. With delightful views of the pretty garden outside, we serve tiers of plates generously filled with sandwiches, homemade cakes and scones, as well as side dishes of strawberry jam and clotted cream.
To complete the delicious treat, we offer a great selection of teas, including Earl Grey, Assam, Darjeeling, breakfast, peppermint and fruit, in addition to a decaffeinated option.
And if you’d like to make a special occasion extra special, we also offer Prosecco afternoon tea and gin afternoon gift vouchers. Prosecco afternoon tea comes with all the usual trimmings plus two glasses of Prosecco, while gin afternoon tea is served with gin.
The Tradition of Afternoon Tea
The origins of this quintessentially British tradition can be traced back to the 19th century, when it was common to eat only twice a day.
Growing peckish between her morning and evening meals, Her Grace Anna Maria, Duchess of Bedford, would ask her butler to prepare her a light snack, accompanied by a pot of tea. Initially enjoyed alone in her boudoir, it wasn’t long before Her Grace started inviting friends to join her for afternoon tea in the drawing room – and thus the tradition was born.
Set within secluded gardens in the heart of Bedfordshire, our historic country house is a beautiful backdrop we’re certain the Duchess would have approved of.
